There was a time when I didn’t really care what I put on and do to my hair. I would blast it with hot air from a hair dryer and straighten it with a flat iron. I would slather it in commercial gels and creams with nary a thought as to what they did to my hair. A few years down the line, all my neglect and abuse finally bore fruit in the form of dry and brittle hair that felt about as luxurious as straw. That wasn’t a very good point in my life and I hated what I did to my hair.
I spoke to a good friend of mine about my hair woes; she had long and silky hair so I figured she must know something I didn’t. I was right—she did know some great hair tips and practices I had no clue about and I was so happy she shared them with me.
Essential Oils for Hair
The first thing she told me was that commercial products that promise great hair usually do more harm than good. Some ingredients used to make commercial products actually prevented the growth of hair or ate away at the follicles. She recommended I try some essential oils for my hair; I mix them with carrier oils and they work wonders on my hair. Check out my favorites below!
- Peppermint Oil – Sometimes, my scalp turns really greasy so I deep condition using peppermint oil with sesame oil as carrier. It does wonders to soothe my scalp and really makes it a lot less oily. It also has that cooling sensation that I so love.
- Lavender oil – Since my hair is dry, I love using lavender oil with it. I mix it with some avocado or almond oil and use it as a deep conditioner twice a week. Not only does it smell heavenly but it also feels like heaven on my hair.
- Rosemary Oil – I like to use rosemary oil since it stimulates hair growth and has that lovely smell. I sometimes mix it with lavender oil and jojoba but I also use it diluted with sesame oil.
