This year, the industry’s best and brightest gathered at the Dolby Theater on March 4th to celebrate the greatest yearly achievements in film. And — let’s face it — we were pretty psyched about the gowns, too. After all, this is the event of the year when Hollywood’s crème de la crème get to walk their most striking ensembles.
So when it came to fashion at the 90th Academy Awards, the star-studded show didn’t hold back. From extravagantly structured pieces to futuristic designs, classic sleek gowns to pure Hollywood opulence, the Oscars 2018 was designed to wow.
Nicole Kidman, Armani Privé
One of the most head-turning looks of the night was seen on Nicole Kidman, who attended the ceremony as a presenter.
The Big Little Lies star, who also won an Oscar for Best Actress in 2003, walked the red carpet in an electric blue gown designed by Armani Privé.
The bold, structured fit perfectly complimented the Australian actress’ tall, slender figure.
However, the piece de resistance of the gown was undoubtedly the oversized bow that was placed at the front of the gown.
The streamlined cut of the dress worked like a charm with Kidman’s sleek do with a middle parting. The richness of the blue was even more emphasized in contrast with sparkling chandelier earrings by Harvey Winston and a vibrant orange lip.
Jennifer Lawrence, Dior
The world’s favorite goofball actress razzled and dazzled when she appeared in a breathtaking Dior dress, a fashion house for which Lawrence is the brand ambassador.
The gown she wore for the 90th Academy Awards showcased Dior’s luxurious visuals to a T.
The former Best Actress winner, who was fresh off the press tour for her movie Red Sparrow, was dripping in gold in a sleek metallic sequin dress with barely-there straps and structured bodice.
The dress was given a touch of punk-rock edge with a smoked out eye and a bright coral-toned lipstick. Lawrence balanced the ultra-sleek aesthetics of the dress by styling her luscious locks into nonchalant waves.
Lupita Nyong’o, Versace
Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t the only who shined on the red carpet in a gold ensemble. Another stunning gold piece was flaunted by the lead from the box office smash hit Black Panther, Lupita Nyong’o.
Nyong’o was clad in a sensual metallic gown that featured an asymmetrical sleeve and a long studded sash that ran from the shoulder, across the bodice and to the hip.
Her perfectly coiffed hairstyle featured three voluminous braids that were woven with a gorgeous golden hairpiece, while the black accents on the gown were complemented by a sultry, smoked out eye makeup.
The Mexican-Kenyan actress is best known for her ethereal light blue look from the 2014 Academy Awards ceremony, when she went home with an Oscar of her own.
Now, it is safe to say that this stunning Versace number won’t fall too far behind when it comes to Nyong’o’s most fascinating sartorial choices.
Gal Gadot, Givenchy Haute Couture
A different take on the metallic look was spotted on the Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who stepped out on the red carpet in a show-stopping Givenchy gown.
The opulent design featured a sea of silver sequins that adorned the dress from head to toe, as well as with delicate straps and a dramatic drop waist fringe skirt, which was evocative of the 1920s flapper style.
The Wonder Woman star, who attended this year’s Oscars to present an award, paired up the mesmerizing gown with a statement diamond necklace from Tiffany & Co.
The makeup featured a subtle eye and a deep, wine-infused lip color.
Zendaya Coleman, Giambattista Valli Haute Couture
Not all looks at this years’ Oscars ceremony were about well-defined, smooth aesthetics.
For example, Zendaya Coleman, whose movie The Greatest Showman was nominated for the Best Original Song, stunned everyone by showing up in a floor-skimming, flowing chiffon gown by Giambattista Valli.
Thanks to the long, draping design of the dress which featured a single off-the-shoulder sleeve, Coleman looked like a bona fide Greek goddess.
The otherworldly vibe of the dress was complemented with a sleek top-knot, while dangling platinum earrings by Heritage added the extra dose of glam to Coleman’s entire ensemble.
The makeup was kept minimal, yet sensual – allowing the stunning gown to be the unrivaled star of the show.
Greta Gerwig, Rodarte
One of the most buzzed-about names at this year’s ceremony was Greta Gerwig, who broke boundaries by being only the fifth woman to be nominated in the Best Director category so far.
To commemorate this historic achievement, Gerwig showed up in a full length, jewel-adorned gown in canary yellow, which was designed by the American fashion house Rodarte.
Red carpet historians were quick to point out how Ladybird director’s gown was reminiscent of the number worn by Michelle Williams at the 2006 Oscars red carpet.
The gorgeous dress was complimented with a delicate necklace, a retro glam do and a deep red lip.
Margot Robbie, Channel Haute Couture
The Best Actress nominee graced the red carpet in a custom-made Channel Haute gown, designed by Karl Lagerfeld himself.
The angelic-white corseted dress featured an intricately-adorned garland that draped across the bodice and the arms.
The delicate look of the dress meshed beautifully with Robbie’s understated makeup look in nude tones. The Australian actress and the lead of the box office hit I, Tonya styled her hair in a chic bob with subtle waves that only added to the splendor of the gown.
Even though Robbie suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction during the ceremony (which she quickly fixed!), that certainly didn’t stop her from being one of the absolute stars of the red carpet.
Taraji P. Henson, Vera Wang
The award for the sexiest ensemble of the night went to none other than Taraji P. Henson, who was one of the presenters at this year’s awards ceremony.
The Empire diva stood out from the crowd when she stepped on the red carpet in a goddess-like black gown, custom designed by Vera Wang.
The flowing, yet decidedly sensual piece featured a mock keyhole neckline with long, dramatic sleeves and a seductive high slit that showcased Henson’s toned physique.
The fierce look was completed with a pair of dizzying Jimmy Choo stilettos, Roberto Coin jewels and an ultra-sleek bob.
Saoirse Ronan, Calvin Klein
At only 23, Saoirse Ronan is already on par with Hollywood’s most famous A-listers – the talented actress attended the ceremony as a third-time Oscar nominee.
This year, it was in the Best Actress category for her work in the film Lady Bird, a delightful coming-of-age comedy directed by Greta Gerwig.
The up-and-coming actress charmed everybody when she stepped out on the red carpet in a delicate Calvin Klein gown.
The design of the dress looked simple and streamlined when seen from the front; however, the back of the dress featured an oversized bow and a dramatic, billowing train.
The vibe of the piece was simultaneously elegant and modern, making it just the right fit for the Irish cinema darling.
The look was completed with a pair of light pink Christian Louboutin heels and sparkling Cartier bling.
Emily Blunt, Schiaparelli Haute Couture
Yet another fairytale-like gown was seen on Emily Blunt, who appeared at the ceremony to present one of the awards.
The stunning pastel-blue piece from Schiaparelli spring 2018 couture collection featured a gorgeous cut with airy sleeves, sweeping train and a high neckline, evocative of the Victorian era.
The British actress accentuated the dreamy dress with a pale blue Judith Leiber clutch and a whopping $250,000 worth of Chopard jewels.
Helen Mirren, Reem Acra
The fact that you can never age out of style was once again proven by the iconic British actress Helen Mirren.
The 72-year-old A-lister stunned in a long-sleeved gown made by Lebanese designer Reem Acra.
The bold, monochromatic look featured a high neckline, structured shoulders and body-hugging cut that went all the way to the floor.
Mirren’s silvery white hair contrasted beautifully against the blue hues of the gown, while the Brit teamed up her elegant dress with a matching clutch and a dramatic Harvey Winston necklace that gave the entire look an added dose of drama.
Allison Williams, Armani Privé
The actress that best evoked the glam of the Old Hollywood era at this year’s Oscars ceremony was none other than Allison Williams.
The 29-year-old, who was attending the Academy Awards for the first time, starred in Get Out, a dark comedy that was among this year’s nominees for Best Picture.
Williams’ delicate nude gown, custom designed by Armani Privé, featured intricate embellishments and a full skirt that extended into a long train.
The soft, 1940s-style curls with a deep side part definitely helped round up the silver screen vibe of the entire look.
Jennifer Garner, Atelier Versace
One of the most vibrant looks pulled off at this year’s red carpet was without a doubt Jennifer Garner’s. All eyes were on the Alias star, who showed up to the ceremony clad in a gorgeous Atelier Versace gown.
The mesmerizing cobalt-blue member featured an asymmetrical design with a bandage bodice, a cape and a floor-length train.
Garner’s gorgeous brown locks were styled into a rich, effortless ‘do with a deep side part, while the head-turning gown was complimented with two white gold and diamond rings and sapphire and diamond earrings from Piaget.
Laura Dern, Calvin Klein
White seemed to be all the rage at this Academy Awards red carpet.
Other than Margot Robbie, a white, goddess-like gown could also be seen on the Hollywood legend, Laura Dern.
The Big Little Lies star graced the award ceremony in a simple, yet elegant full-length piece from Calvin Klein. The streamlined, figure-hugging silhouette was given a bit more structure with a single capelet sleeve.
The sleek vibe of the dress was complemented with a metallic clutch, a statement ring and gorgeous side-swept waves reminiscent of Old Hollywood divas.
Allison Janney, Reem Acra
Red was also one of the most popular colors of the night, and no one wore is quite like the Best Actress winner, Allison Janney.
The gorgeous scarlet gown was a perfect fit for the Best Actress winner’s statuesque physique.
The clean, streamlined cut of the dress was given a touch of extravagance with a plunging neckline and massive, delightfully witchy floor-length sleeves.
The fabulous gown was accessorized with a chic Roger Vivier, a pair of Jimmy Choos and a beautiful diamond necklace from Forevermark.
Not only did the beloved I, Tonya star went home with an Oscar in her hand, she also triumphed as of the most stunning leading ladies of the night.
And with this, we round up our list of the most stunning look seen at the 90th Academy Awards. Seeing as this year’s red carpet was full of glamorous, eye-catching ensembles, we can’t wait to see what A-listers and their beloved designers have in store for us in 2019.
