The first time I saw yoga poses, I have to admit that I felt a little scared. After all, while I was reasonably fit, I wasn’t that flexible and I simply did not see how I could twist my body into pretzels. Luckily for me, I decided to be brave and give it a try and what happened was simply glorious. I discovered that yoga isn’t about twisting my body into strange and painful twists but rather, it was about breathing and concentration. I didn’t have to hurt myself to do yoga and you do not have to either!
Simple Yoga Moves to Try
Mountain – This is a very easy pose to do and you can do it even if you have never done Yoga before. Just stand tall and keep your feet together. Keep those shoulders relaxed and make sure your weight is distributed evenly. Breathe deeply through the nose and raise your hands to the sky with palms facing together. Hold the pose as you exhale slowly through the nose. This is a great pose to start the day.
Downward Dog – You start this pose by getting down on all fours. Place your hands right below your shoulders; place your knees directly below your hips. Walk forward a few inches and spread your fingers wide. Make sure you press your palms to your yoga mat. Then curl your toes slowly and lift your hips high towards the ceiling and bring your body to an upside-down V shape. Make sure your shoulders are not pressed to your ears. Your feet should be apart about hip wide and your knees bent slightly. Stay in the pose for 3-4 breaths.
Tree pose – This pose starts out like the mountain pose. Then shift your weight into one leg. Make sure your hips face forward. Lift your other leg and rest the sole on the inside of your leg that is still on the ground. When you are there, put your palms together in front of your chest in a prayer pose. Repeat this with the other leg and hold for three breaths on each side.
Yoga gave me balance and peace of mind. I hope these simple poses help you gain balance as well.
